sandy hook principal dawn hochsprung was one of them. our next guest has lived in this community for almost 20 years. all three of her children attended sandy hook elementary, and she became friends with many of the teacher there's, including dawn hock strung. miranda is here tonight to remember. thank you so much. i know three children. one of your children has friends who have lost siblings? >> yes. >> let me ask you about dawn. you knew her well. you worked with her for a while. >> i didn't know her well. i worked with her because i was very active as mom in the school. yes, my youngest daughter, when she was there, dawn was there at the same time. yeah, dawn was an unusual principal. she didn't have that formality that a lot of, you know, administrators might have. she had this radiant smile. she was always about fun and warmth. and, you know, you kind of felt like you could just give her a hug as soon as you met her. she had a rare quality. >> how do you -- how do you feel, and how does this town feel, just being here? it is a pictu

it's sad, they lost a leader today at sandy hook. my prayers will be, you know, for our community as well. >> again, as you heard, lost a leader here, and dealing with this loss, dealing with the pain, dealing with the suffering, and this is what this community is going to cope with from this point on. for days, weeks, months, and certainly for the parents of those children, no saying how long they will be dealing with their grief. ashleigh. >> and so distressing, jason, to know that principal just this fall implemented a brand new security system where you had to get buzzed in at 9:30 in the morning, and yet this was perpetrated against her school. jason carroll, reporting live just across town from where i am. part of the reason i am where i am, is that the media is getting regular updates at this location, not only from the state police, but also from connecticut's governor dan malloy, who has come at regular intervals to brief us, but also spoken with the families who were given the ultimate terrible news they would not be reunit

she taught first grade at sandy hook elementary school. cnn's jason carroll joins me now with more on that vigil. how is this community dealing with this extraordinary loss right now? >> they're just completely torn up. there's no other way to say it, to see the number of people, hundreds who came out here at stratford high school. this is where victoria, vicki as everyone called her, vicki soto, this is where she graduated back in 2003. when everyone got together here tonight, they did their best to remember her. they talked about how soto always wanted to be a teacher, ever since she was a little girl. she talked about wanting to be a teacher, that's what her friends said. tonight they talked about the heroic actions that she took in her classroom when the gunman burst through the door, how she rushed the kids into a closet to try and save them and then of course the gunman took her life. as we were out here tonight with her sisters and her brother, her cousins and all of her friends, and doing what they can to remember her, i spoke to o

and she loved her school, sandy hook. in fact, this week, i was telling somebody she had a stomach ache one day and i said to her, why don't you stay home with mom? she said, no way, i have too much fun there and i don't want to miss anything. she would skip to get on the bus. it wasn't even -- you know, every morning, the backpack was packed the night before and ready to get on the bus in the morning and head off to school. we would blow kisses every morning to each other. i remember that morning putting her on the bus. she had a habit of blowing kisses and then she would give me a big liver lips like this, and i knew she was so happy to go off and get there. i would like to say that she was at a place that she loved so we take comfort in that, that we know she was in a place that she really loved. >> and with friends. >> and with friends. >> people who loved her. that's, i think, the whole community and the school and the teachers, they all -- they're all raising your child. and it's a special place. >> it is. and i tak
